Homemade Sausage Calzones

Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups grated mozzarella
  • 1/2 cup grated provolone
  • 1/2 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 whole egg
  • 8 ounce of tomato sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • sea salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 ball pizza dough

Directions

Prep: 1. Set pizza dough out to rise according to package instructions. 2. Slice onions 3. Grate cheeses. 4. Beat egg. 5. Pre-heat over to 375. Make: 1. In a skillet brown the sausage, drain and set aside. 2. Over medium heat cook onions until soft and golden. 3. In a small sauce pan over medium low heat combine the tomato sauce, herbs and spices. Stir until hot then remove from heat and let cool. 4. Divide the pizza dough into 4 equal portions. Roll out and spread on a layer of tomato sauce. 5. Top with Italian sausage, cooked onions and cheeses. Fold the dough over the top of the filling and twist and pinch the two seams together. 6. Brush the top of each calzone with egg. 7. Bake for 20 minutes.
